Aug 20, 2014 Technically, the new deal is actually a rewrite of the final three seasons of an eight-year deal the MAC was in, with a 10-year extension. This totals 13 years, and means ESPN will broadcast MAC football, and other sports, through the end of the 2026-2027 season when this new deal expires.
Although the regular season has ended, college football is still building toward its biggest moments, and so are the incentive earnings of head coaches that will end up as the largest part of incentive payouts schools also will make to assistant coaches, strength coaches, and — at some schools — to athletics directors and a range of team staffers.
But head coaches are not just qualifying for bonus money. They also are reaching benchmarks that trigger future considerations from their schools.
On Saturday, Kentucky's Mark Stoops triggered an automatic one-year contract extension when the Wildcats defeated Louisville for their seventh win of the season. Stoops is set to receive $6.25 million in basic annual pay from the school that additional year, ending June 30, 2026. Since his contract calls for him to be paid 75% of all his scheduled basic annual pay if he is fired without cause, the guaranteed value of that year stands at slightly less than $4.7 million.
For the first time, USA TODAY Sports is tracking on a weekly basis the amounts public-school football head coaches are scheduled to be getting and for what achievements. The information is based on contracts USA TODAY Sports obtained from the schools through open-records requests and is updated through the games of Nov. 30.
